Job Description
Are you an experienced and dedicated Respiratory Therapist looking for a new challenge? 
Join our top notch team of professionals at St. Joseph's Hospital, where we 
put our patients first in everything we do!  
 
We currently have a part-time evening/night shift position open that is scheduled to work 20 hours a week. This would include rotating weekends and holidays.
 
The Respiratory Care Practitioner will perform all aspects of respiratory care for the daily operation of the Respiratory Therapy Department including treatment and assessment of all patients requiring respiratory care.
  
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
 
1.         Adult Ventilation
·         Provide continuous mechanical ventilation for adult patients.
·         Provides ventilatory support for patients that need to be transported throughout the medical complex.
·         Perform patient care (ventilatory care) in Marshfield Clinic when assigned.

2.       Pediatric Ventilation

·         Provide continuous mechanical ventilation for pediatric patients.
·         Provides ventilatory support for patients that need to be transported throughout the medical complex.
·         Perform patient care (ventilatory care) in Marshfield Clinic when assigned.
3.       Ventilation Neonatal
·         Provide continuous mechanical ventilation for neonatal patients.
·         Provides ventilatory support for patients that need to be transported throughout the medical complex.
4.       Intermittent Treatments for Adults
·         Perform BIPAP/CPAP, EZPAP and incentive spirometry (IS).  Must be able to assess the disease process of the patient and modify the therapy accordingly.
·         Administer aerosolized medications.  Detect and report abnormal patient reactions to the physician or supervisor in a timely manner.  Evaluate patient         appropriateness for metered dose inhaler therapy.
·         Perform chest physiotherapy (CPT) and breathing exercise techniques.  Assess effectiveness of therapy and recognize and report variances or questionable applications.  Performs alternatives to CPT, such as positive expiratory pressure, vibratory therapy and chest vest therapy.
·         Perform patient care (treatments) in Marshfield Clinic when assigned.

5.       Intermittent Treatments for Pediatrics

7.       Patient Monitoring
·         Perform continuous monitoring of patients such as oxygen saturation analysis, end tidal CO2 analysis, nocturnal saturation studies and other monitoring.
·         Perform apnea/bradycardia monitoring and other monitoring.
8.       Patient Education
·         Provide patient education, i.e. smoking cessation, asthma education, discharge instruction, etc.
9.       Oxygen Rounds
·         Perform oxygen therapy, using knowledge of indications and benefits of all types of equipment.  Recognizes, rectifies, and reports improper applications.  Implement the oxygen therapy protocol.
·         Perform humidity and aerosol therapy.
·         Perform routine patient surveillance and equipment inspection to insure proper use and functioning of that equipment in both the hospital and clinic.
·         Process for reuse equipment and supplies that are cleaned in the department, deliver reusable supplies and equipment to Central Service for sterilization, and pick-up clean equipment.
10.    Diagnostics
·         Perform bedside pulmonary function screenings for diagnostic purposes.
·         Perform bedside spontaneous parameters, i.e. Vital capacity, tidal volume, negative inspiratory force and rapid shallow breathing index.
11.    ICU Procedures
·         Perform the following invasive procedures upon completing department certification:
          - Nasotracheal, endotracheal and tracheostomy suctioning
          - Arterial blood gases punctures and analysis
          - Drawing off arterial lines
·         Perform advanced cardiac life support as a member of the Code Blue Team.
·         Perform weekly ABG comparisons on  the ABG analyzer and report results to the Laboratory Department.
·         Perform cartridge changes on ABG analyzer or maintenance as required by manufacturer.
·         Perform ABG analyzer troubleshooting.
·         Perform arterial punctures in adult/pediatric areas and analyze blood for oxygenation and acid-base balance.
·         Perform specialty gas therapy, such as nitric oxide and heliox therapy.
12.     Patient Care Documentation
·         Provide complete written documentation in the medical record of all respiratory care provided.
·         Formulate patient care plans.

13.     Department Documentation and Paperwork

·         Complete all departmental paperwork, computer entries and patient charges necessary for day-to-day operation.
14.     Communication Regarding Patient Care
·         Communicate orally to nursing staff or other ancillary staff any pertinent patient care or department information.
·         Provide a complete oral report to incoming shift regarding respiratory care being provided to all patients.
·         Communicate to physician any recommendation of change in therapeutic regime and documents any physician orders in the medical record.

15.     Teamwork/Communication

·         Communicate timely with the supervisor or department director any problems or unusual occurrences.
·         Pull new orders from the computer system, when assigned, and carry out or communicate to the appropriate person.
·         Perform other duties and responsibilities in keeping with overall department and hospital goals and objectives.
·         Utilizes free time to complete extra duties, i.e. back room, helping co-workers.
16.     Safety and Infection Control
·         Adhere to department and hospital policies and procedures regarding safety standards.
·         Adhere to department and hospital policies and procedures regarding infection control procedures.
17.     Employee Education/Development
·         View educational videos or CD's.
·         Attend departmental meetings or read and initial all minutes from missed departmental meeting.
·         Complete competencies in required time frames.
·         Attend new equipment inservices or arranges a make-up session.
  
 


Requirements
  • Graduate or eligible to graduate within 6 months from a 2 year, Associate Degree Respiratory Therapy program approved by the Council of Medical Education of the American Medical Association
  • Licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in the State of Wisconsin
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (Need to obtain within 2 years of hire)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (able to obtain upon hire)
  • Acute Life Support (ACLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) (required within 2 years of hire)
  • Knowledgeable in working with compressed gases, both flammable and non-flammable, cryogenic liquids and compressed gases that supports combustion and the associated safety/fire precautions
  • Ability to perform bedside pulmonary function screening for diagnostic purposes
